The brief

Specified during the build, not after it

A seven bedroom new build in Spain, 3,264 sq ft (303 m²). The client approached us while the house was still under construction, which is the point at which a smart home stops being a retrofit and becomes part of the architecture.

The requirement was a complete system rather than a set of connected products: lighting, climate, security, access and media, all specified together and all controlled from one place.

Coming in during the build meant we could coordinate with the electrical contractor before first fix, and the wiring left room for what the house would need.

Lighting

Fifty-two switches, one language

Lighting carried this project. Every principal circuit is dimmable, with addressable LED strips handling cove and feature lighting, and 52 smart switches replacing conventional plates across the house.

The switches respond to gesture and multitouch, so a single plate covers a scene, a dim level and a room-off without a second switch beside it. The wall does more and looks like less.

Coordination

The conversation that saves the project

We worked directly with the client's electrical contractor during first fix. Smart switches, dimmable circuits and control positions need decisions made before the walls close, and a system designed around wiring that was never planned for it is a compromise from day one.

That coordination is why 52 switch positions across seven bedrooms and the ground floor went in cleanly, with capacity left for what the house might add later.

The interface

Tap the room, not the device list

Over 150 devices sit behind one interface. SH-Pro's 3D Spatial Digital Twin shows the property in three dimensions, so control happens by touching a room rather than working down a list of names.

Lights, climate, cameras and door status appear on the room they belong to, at home or away. Nobody has to remember which app owns which device, because there is only one.

  • mmWave presence sensors detect occupancy rather than movement, so rooms do not go dark on someone sitting still
  • Concealed sensors: no visible PIR housings in the finished spaces
  • Identical view on mobile and tablet for the whole family

Security

Colour at night, and plates on the drive

Twelve Hikvision cameras cover the interior and the grounds. They capture full colour after dark rather than switching to infrared, which is the difference between identifying a vehicle and recording a grey shape.

Object and sound recognition filter the alerts down to events worth opening. Number plate recognition logs which vehicles come onto the property, which turned out to be the feature the client valued most.

Energy

A fully electric house that watches the tariff

Everything runs on electricity, so every load is measurable and every load is schedulable. Heating and hot water run when the unit cost is lower, rather than on a fixed timer that ignores price.

Occupancy drives the rest. Lights and appliances shut down in empty rooms, and holiday mode powers the house down when the family is away for a stretch.
